How to Surf: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Aaron Belyea

Surfing is an exhilarating sport that combines the thrill of riding waves with the serenity of being out in the ocean. The sheer excitement of catching your first wave and the joy of mastering the art of surfing await you. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to improve your skills, this step-by-step guide will help you get started on your surfing journey.

1. The Crucial Step: Choosing the Right Surfboard

  • Beginners: Opt for a longboard or a foam board. These boards are more stable and more accessible to balance on, making them perfect for beginners.
  • Intermediate to Advanced: As you progress, you can move to shorter boards, which allow for more maneuverability and advanced techniques.

2. Get the Necessary Gear

  • Wetsuit: Depending on the water temperature, a wetsuit might be necessary to keep you warm and comfortable.
  • Leash: This attaches your ankle to the board, ensuring you don't lose it if you fall off.
  • Wax: Apply surf wax to your board for better grip.

3. Learn Basic Surfing Terms (we did a blog on this earlier - check it out!)

  • Line-up: The area where surfers wait for waves.
  • Break: Where the wave starts to break.
  • Whitewater: The bubbly part of the wave after it breaks.
  • Face: The smooth, unbroken part of the wave.

4. Practice Paddling

  • Lie on Your Board: Position yourself in the middle of the board, keeping your chest up.
  • Paddle Technique: Use long, deep strokes with your arms, alternating sides. Keep your body balanced and avoid excessive rocking.

5. Learn to Pop-Up

  • Practice on Land: Start by lying on your board on the sand. Place your hands under your shoulders, push up like a push-up, and quickly bring your feet under you to stand up in one fluid motion.
  • Perfect Your Stance: Your front foot should be near the center of the board, with your back foot perpendicular to the stringer (the line running down the middle of the board). Bend your knees and keep your arms out for balance.

6. Understanding the Ocean

  • Read the Waves: Observe the waves to understand their patterns and where they break. This will help you choose the right waves to catch.
  • Respect the Ocean: Be aware of currents, tides, and potential hazards. Surf with a buddy, and never go out in uncomfortable conditions.

7. Catching Your First Wave

  • Position Yourself: Paddle to the line-up and wait for a suitable wave. For beginners, start with smaller, less powerful waves.
  • Timing: As the wave approaches, start paddling towards the shore. When you feel the wave lift you, paddle harder to catch it.
  • Pop-Up: Once you feel the board's speed increase, quickly pop up to your feet.

8. Riding the Wave

  • Balance: Keep your knees bent and your weight centred over the board.
  • Steering: Use your weight to steer the board. Lean slightly in the direction you want to go.
  • Enjoy the Ride: Relax and enjoy the sensation of riding the wave.

9. Patience and Practice: The Key to Mastering Surfing

  • Remember, every great surfer started as a beginner. The key to mastering surfing is consistency. The more you practice, the better you'll get. Surfing requires time and dedication to master, but the journey is as rewarding as the destination.
  • Stay Positive: Every surfer falls off their board. Embrace the wipeouts and learn from them.

10. Surf Etiquette

  • Respect Others: Give way to surfers already riding the wave and avoid dropping in on someone else's wave.
  • Wait Your Turn: Be patient and wait for your turn in the line-up.
  • Be Friendly: Surfing is a community. Be respectful and friendly to fellow surfers.

Surfing is a way of life that connects you with nature and offers unparalleled freedom and exhilaration. By following these steps and practicing regularly, you'll soon find yourself catching waves and experiencing the joy of surfing. Remember, every great surfer started as a beginner, so stay patient, keep practicing, and most importantly, have fun!

Happy surfing! 🌊🏄‍♀️
