Hiking Through the Heart of New Brunswick: A Personal Journey

New Brunswick’s beauty is hidden within its forests, lakes, and winding trails. I packed my hiking boots and set off to explore some of the more iconic landscapes. From rugged coastal paths to dense, mossy woods, New Brunswick offers a variety of hiking experiences that cater to every level. Join me on this incredible journey through New Brunswick!

1. Fundy National Park – Coastal Splendor

My first stop was Fundy National Park, home to one of the most breathtaking coastlines in the province. The park offers several trails, but I chose the Laverty Falls hike. The path meanders through dense forests, gradually giving way to the thunderous sound of the falls. After about an hour, the view of the cascading water surrounded by rocks and ferns made the sweat worthwhile.

Hidden Gem: At the end of Laverty Falls, there's a small swimming hole nestled between the rocks—a crystal-clear pool fed by the waterfall. It's the perfect spot to cool off after a challenging hike.

2. Mount Carleton Provincial Park – Highest Peaks and Quiet Lakes

For those craving a more rugged adventure, Mount Carleton, the highest peak in the Maritimes, is a must-hike. The trail starts gently but soon turns steep as you ascend through thick forests, with the air getting crisper as you climb. Once at the top, you’re rewarded with panoramic views of the entire park—a sea of green stretching out beneath you.

The lakes in the park are also worth exploring. There's a quiet spot on the shore of Nictau Lake for a quick swim, a secluded area far from the more popular beaches.

3. Kouchibouguac National Park – Beaches and Boardwalks

Kouchibouguac offers a totally different vibe compared to the dense forests of Mount Carleton. Here, you’ll find sandy beaches and coastal dunes. The Bog Trail was a serene walk, where wooden boardwalks snake through marshlands, allowing you to admire rare plants and wildlife. It’s an easy trail, perfect for unwinding.

4. Hidden Swimming Hole – Parlee Brook Amphitheatre

Tucked away near Sussex is a lesser-known trail called Parlee Brook Amphitheatre. This unique spot feels like something out of a fairy tale, with steep rock walls and a narrow stream cutting through the middle. After a short hike, you’ll find an enchanting swimming hole framed by towering cliffs. The water is cold but incredibly refreshing after the hike.

New Brunswick’s wilderness is vast, and each trail tells its own story. From majestic peaks to tranquil lakes and hidden swimming spots, NB lives up to it's reputation as the "Picture Province."
