What is Metta Bhavana?
Metta Bhavana (Loving-kindness meditation) is about developing a mindset of unconditional kindness and love towards oneself and others. It involves four key steps:

  1. Focusing on yourself
  2. Extending to a loved one
  3. Reaching out to others
  4. Expanding your circle of loving-kindness to include all living beings
A challenge to be sure; with great rewards.

How to Do Metta Bhavana / Loving-Kindness Meditation

Find a Comfortable Position: Sit comfortably with your back straight and hands resting on your lap. You can also lie down if that’s more comfortable for you.
Close Your Eyes: Gently close your eyes to help you focus inward.
Take a Few Deep Breaths: Begin with a few deep breaths to center yourself and relax your body. Inhale deeply through your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth.
Start with Yourself: Focus on yourself and generate feelings of love and kindness towards yourself. Repeat silently to yourself: "May I be happy?" "May I be healthy?" "May I be safe?" "May I live with ease?" Say these words until you believe them to be true. Embrace the power of accountability.
Move to a Loved One: Bring to mind someone you care about deeply. Visualize this person and silently repeat: "May you be happy." "May you be healthy." "May you be safe." "May you live with ease." Say these words until you believe them to be true. Embrace the powers of acceptance and forgiveness.
Extend to Others: Gradually extend your feelings of loving-kindness to other people in the following sequence:
            • A good friend: Repeat the phrases for a close friend.
            • A neutral person: Think of someone you neither like nor dislike (e.g., a coworker or an acquaintance) and repeat the phrases.
            • A problematic person: Bring to mind someone you have conflicts with or find challenging. Extend loving-kindness to them, even if it feels difficult.
            • Expand to All Beings: Finally, expand your circle of loving-kindness to include all living beings. Silently repeat: "May all beings be happy." "May all beings be healthy." "May all beings be safe." "May all beings live with ease."
            • End with Reflection: Spend a few moments reflecting on the feelings of loving-kindness you have generated. Notice any changes in your emotional state.

            Tips for Effective Practice

            • Consistency: Practice regularly, even if it’s just for a few minutes each day. Consistency enhances the benefits.
            • Patience: Be patient with yourself when extending loving-kindness to difficult people. It may take time to feel these emotions genuinely.
            • Visualization: Use visualization to help evoke feelings of love and kindness. Imagine the person you are focusing on smiling and happy.
            • Start Small: Remember, loving kindness is a practice, and like any practice, it takes time to master. If you find it challenging to extend loving kindness to certain people, start with those you have positive feelings toward and gradually work your way towards more difficult individuals. Be patient with yourself and trust in the process.
